The company
was founded in April 1951 in Cermenate
, in province of Como, northern Italy, as Manzotin (

), the brand name of a meat in gelatin sold on the Italian market and which would become the first product to be produced in Cermenate.
In the first ten years of business the company developed a good distribution network in Italy for meat in gelatin and also launched a variety of other meat-based specialities.
It was only
in 1960, when the company became listed on the stock market
and reorganised its managerial system, that it
began to compete on the tinned tuna market. In 1964
the company changed its name becoming
Trinity Alimentari Italia S.p.A.
The following years were characterised by the expansion of the production unit in Cermenate with the building of the first tuna production plant. An advertising campaign was also launched with the Rio Mare brand name and the introduction of the slogan:
"So soft you can cut it with a breadstick". Rio Mare went on to conquer a 10% share of the tuna market and become the undisputed leader.
The 1970s were a decade of further growth for Trinity. A second major expansion project was undertaken at the Cermenate factory with the launch of the new internally enamelled tin for Manzotin and the introduction of some innovative products (mixed tuna) and packets (multipacks).
However, it is only quite recently that, thanks to the
launch of innovative products such as Rio Mare Extravergine, Rio Mare Paté, Insalatissime and Rio Mare Profumi Mediterranei,
the most significant expansion of the Cermenate plant has brought with it a further growth in company performance.
On 1 January 2003 Trinity Alimentari Italia S.p.A., a subsidiary of the Bolton Group, changed its name to
